Two small fine line tattoos: a black heart with a red drop and dots on the inner wrist, and a red heart above a black heartbeat line on the palm side of a hand.

Heart and heartbeat tattoos on wrist and hand

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

Two small tattoos sit on pale skin. The upper tattoo is a black, curved heart outline with a short red stroke and two dots beside it. The lower tattoo pairs a red heart outline with a black heartbeat line that ends in two dots, and the linework is thin and even throughout. The composition is close up, with the two designs placed on separate areas of the body and mostly red and black ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The paper roll on the Strength Tester had jammed again, and Dolly Marsh was still picking ink off her fingers when the last lorry rumbled onto the field at Wickham Common. Rain had come in sideways all afternoon and turned the sawdust to porridge, and the cartwheel of bulbs over the Waltzer hung dark because the generator was sulking.

Her brother Ivo found her behind the booth with a spanner and a cup of tea gone cold. "It's not the roll," he said, peering into the drum. "It's the stylus. It keeps skipping." He tugged the strip free and held it up to the lamp. Across the paper ran a jagged line, spike after spike, with a long flat stretch in the middle where nobody had hit the bell at all. At the end, two blots of ink had dried where the needle had stuttered, like a full stop and a breath.

"That's the summer Dad lost his temper with the Norwich man," Dolly said. She had been seven. She remembered the bell ringing out over the car park, the hammer slamming the pad, the needle flying off the top of the paper, and their father sitting very still on the caravan steps afterwards. The heart they painted on the sign the following spring was red, because red was the only paint left in the tin.

Ivo cut a fresh roll from the spool and threaded it through with his teeth set. Dolly took the mallet and struck the pad, once, then twice, and the line climbed, dropped and climbed again while the bulbs flickered back to life above them. "Leave it running," she said. "Let's see what we get."
