Small heart outline on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A hand holds an open passport with visible entry and exit stamps in front of a vintage world map. A small, simple heart outline in black ink sits on the wrist below the hand. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the image is dominated by the muted colours of the map.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the fire, because this is the tale of Mabel Orrin and the map that was never finished. In the old days, before the sea took the low towns and the wind learned to carry the dust, every grown person was given a little book of paper pages, and at each border a stranger pressed an ink stamp into it to say you had been there and gone away again. Mabel kept such a book for forty years. Her pages were a jumble of purple circles and crooked dates, and she was proud of every one.

Her work was to mend the big world maps that hung in the schoolhouses at Kettle Cross, where the children learned that the land had once been cut into a hundred pieces by lines drawn by people who had never walked it. Every winter she set her ink pot on the table, laid the old sheet flat, and retraced the coasts that had shifted. One January she found a faded heart pencilled in the margin beside a dead inland city, no bigger than a thumbnail, drawn by a hand she could never name.
She sat with that heart for a week. She thought of the stamps in her own book, and how a passport proves only where your feet have been, never where your heart went. So she inked the heart carefully on the inside of her own wrist, thin and even, and climbed up to the schoolhouse to tell the children the map was finished.
And that, my lovelies, is why the cartographers of Kettle Cross never sign their work, only mark it with a small black heart where the lines run out. Now off to bed, the lot of you.
