The black car you left in the drive has been moved twice now by the man from number nine, who says it blocks his view of the sea, which it does not. I have told him it is yours and you will want it when you are back. I have not told him you may not be.

Your letter came on Tuesday with the Lisbon stamp and a picture of a white flying boat tucked inside the fold. You wrote that the crew let you sit up front while the lights of the coast slid under the wing, and that your new passport cover has the little aeroplane stamped in silver above the word PASSPORT, so you can never lose it on a bus. I read it twice on the step with the tea going cold. I have kept your room as you left it, the wireless on the sill and the pressed sea-pink in the Bible, though the letter from the Ministry in April did not say anything about your return.

I am not writing to scold. Your father flew too, and I know the pull of it better than you think. Only send a postcard with a proper address so I know which sea is yours and which is a sea I am meant to picture.

The gull still lands on the chimney pot every morning at six, looking through the window at your room as if it expects you to be sitting on the sill with your boots on the radiator. I have started leaving the window open a crack for him. Come home when you can, or come home when you want, but write first so I can put the kettle on.
