Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white close-up of a torso and hands, with the face cropped out at the top. A small, solid heart outline sits on one finger, and a dark patterned tattoo is visible on the forearm at the left edge. The image is high contrast with silver rings and a fine chain necklace, and the hand holds a printed plastic cup.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The spoon had belonged to Aunt Maud, and it was bent at the neck from a bad winter. Tomasz wanted it straight before the Saturday market. He worked at the bench at the back of the ironmonger's on Broad Street, where the gas ring hissed and the window showed nothing but rain running down from the gutter. Mr Oduya, who owned the shop and had owned the bench before him, watched him file the bowl flat and said nothing for an hour, which was how he said most things.

When the spoon was true again, Tomasz had a scrap of silver left from the bowl, too small for anything useful. He cut it into a heart with the jeweller's saw, quickly and without measuring, the way his grandmother cut pastry. He let it cool on his palm while the solder set. Mr Oduya picked it up, turned it over, and set it down beside the rings that came in for repair. "That one is no use to anyone," he said. "Keep it anyway."

Tomasz kept it in his apron pocket for a year. He forgot it on the morning he left for Leeds, and found it again months later under a mug of cold tea, where it had left a faint grey ring on the wood. He rubbed the mark away with his thumb and thought about the bench and the rain and the gas ring hissing like something alive.

On the first morning in his own flat, he sat by the window with a sewing needle, a bottle of ink and a steady hand. He pressed the small outline to the skin of one finger and began to follow it.
