The hut is busier than I expected this summer. Stripes sell like hot buns. Mr Pargeter wants four more striped awnings by Thursday, and the bathing machines have all been repainted in the same red and cream they wore before the war. Every morning I take the towels down from the line and fold them the way you showed me, corners to corners, and every morning the gulls have a go at the bunting.

Last Tuesday a boy from the lifeboat came asking after a man called Tobias Reed, who had walked off the cliff path in the fog. He had one of my cards in his pocket, the one I leave on the hut hook for lost children. The boy said it had only one line on it, and he had read it aloud to the coastguard: 'Come back before the tide.' I had no memory of writing that. I have been turning it over ever since, wondering whether the word on my arm is the same word or a different one that got lost on the way down the page.
