Mr Dunning from the lost property office brought me a cup of tea without sugar, which I took as his apology on behalf of the railway.

You asked in your last letter what I intend to do about Tom. I still haven't decided. But this morning, while sorting the returned library books in the ticket hall, I found a sycamore leaf pressed flat inside a timetable from 1978. Its stalk had been folded over so the two halves met in a point, and the veins made a shape like a heart drawn in a hurry. I put it in my coat pocket. Then I found the other half of it in a book two shelves down, as if someone had torn it in two and tucked the pieces where they would never meet.

Dunning says the shelf behind his counter holds everything people meant to come back for: a green glove, a wedding order of service, a clockwork robin that still ticks when you shake it. I've started a list in the back of my notebook of things I would claim if anyone asked. The leaf is at the top, though I'm not sure yet whether it belongs to me or to the station.

The 6.40 has finally been announced for platform four. I'm going to walk down with both halves in my glove and buy a ticket to wherever it's bound. Keep the kettle on for me. Love, Ruth
