Flower peace symbol on an ankle

Botanical · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A peace symbol sits inside a circle, with its outline drawn in black and its circle formed by a chain of small five-petalled flowers. The flowers are shaded in teal, blue and lilac with simple dark centres, and the ink is set against smooth, lightly shaded skin. The tattoo is centred in the frame, with the ankle bone and a crinkled teal backdrop visible around it.

Mara Tallis knelt in the hydroponic bay of the Verity Ansel, pressing a cutting into grey grit while the hull ticked as it cooled. The ring of flower beds had been her grandmother's design, chalked on a wall in the dry dock at Ceres before anyone aboard had seen a star through a viewport. Nine rings of blossom, a chain of five-petalled flowers, and two dark lines running through the middle like the spokes of a wheel that had forgotten how to turn.

The teal strain was failing. Since the ship swung onto the long burn, the lamps had shifted from white to the thin violet the algae liked, and the blue pigment in the lilac petals had gone pale at the edges. Oshin, the ship's botanist, wanted to rip the whole ring out and start again with something hardier. Mara wanted to keep the shape. She argued it at the galley table for three nights running, until the cook gave up arguing with her and simply started leaving tea by her elbow.

In the end she made a deal with the lamps. She moved the teal beds to the cold side, where the hull ran close to the frost line, and let the violet shine on the lilac. Half of the flowers died. The rest went quiet for a month, and then one morning a child called Ebba, who had been counting petals through the glass every day, ran to the galley shouting that the circle had closed again.

Mara went down with her cup still warm in her hand. The small blue blooms were opening along the rim one after another, and the dark spokes at the centre held steady, as they had since the chalk was first laid on the wall. She set the cup on the rail and watched the light come round the ring until it reached the start again.
