Small hummingbird silhouette on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black silhouette of a hummingbird in flight, with its wings raised and long beak pointing left. The shape is filled with black ink and has no internal shading or detail. It sits on warm skin on the upper back near the shoulder blade, with the rest of the frame showing a white garment strap and dark hair.

Dear Marguerite, the boat didn't come on Tuesday, so I've had three days to think about the hummingbird that got into the kitchen. Papa swore it had come off the frangipani by the well, which can't be right, because nothing that small should cross the channel from Tresco on its own, but there it was, hanging in the air above the sink as if someone had pinned it there and forgotten to take the pin out.

It wouldn't leave by the door. I opened every shutter and it went round the room twice, stopping at the window, then the lamp, then the blue jug, always with that long beak pointed left as if it had somewhere it was late for. Mrs Penhallow from next door said they only come to houses where someone is about to be brave. I told her that was nonsense, and then I stood on a chair with the tea towel and waited until it flicked out into the yard.
The thing is, I walked down to the harbour this morning to ask Tom Carne whether the Thursday crossing was off. He said it was, and I said fine, and then I didn't come back up the hill. I sat on the wall with my feet over the water and worked out that I've been waiting to be told to go since you left. Nobody is going to tell me. The little bird didn't ask anyone's permission either.
So I've written to the agent in Penzance about the room over the bakery. If the reply is yes I'll be on the Monday boat, and you can have the blue jug back, since it was yours anyway. Keep the shutters open. Love, Nell. P.S. Papa has hung a feeder by the frangipani. He says it's for the bird. I think it's for me.
