Three birds in flight on upper chest

Chest · Black and grey · Photo

Three small black bird silhouettes in flight sit in a loose line across the upper chest, just below the collarbone. The birds are filled with solid black ink, with rough edges and no visible shading or interior detail. The photo is taken at close range under warm, uneven lighting, with a teal strapless top visible at the bottom of the frame.

Ray sat in the caravan doorway with his tea gone cold, watching the stile across the field where the lorries waited. "Strike the rifles Saturday," he said. "Go on, before the wind turns." She asked where they were going. He nodded at the hedge, where a flock of starlings was folding and unfolding over the stubble like a sheet being shaken out.

That night she unhooked the three birds herself and carried them to the cab wrapped in a tea towel, the wire cold through the cloth. At the next pitch, on a green with no name on the signpost, she hung them back on the rail and set the gallery straight by torchlight, sighting down the barrels until the paint looked level.

By seven the first lorry was rolling out of the gate. The birds on the rail caught the early sun and went on turning towards the hedge, as though they had only ever been waiting for a wind.
