Small lavender sprig on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small sprig of lavender with several thin stems and buds runs diagonally across the forearm. The linework is fine and even, with the flower spikes rendered in light shading and the leaves outlined in simple strokes. The ink is black and the design sits in the centre of the frame against a plain turquoise backdrop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud Ferrier knew the lavender had gone over before she reached the top field, because the bees had already left the lower rows for the clover. She walked the hedge line with her skirt hitched and her shears knocking against her hip, counting stems the way her grandmother had taught her: one for the table, one for the drawer, one for whoever was sick.

Her brother Tom was waiting at the gate with the cart and the look he wore when he had already decided something. "Mr Haley's offered four shillings the bundle," he said. "Four, for the whole field, sold standing." She said nothing. The ground sloped down toward the wood where the village gave out and the oaks began, and she could see the smoke from the cottages rising thin and straight above the canopy.

That afternoon she cut three sprigs, slim and grey-violet, each with its ladder of buds, and bound them at the base with green thread. She didn't tell Tom. She carried them down into the wood and laid them on the flat stone by the spring, where her mother used to leave crusts for the robin, and then she walked back up the hill with empty hands.

At dusk Tom went down with the lantern and found the stone bare except for one dried stem, its buds gone papery, and a scrap of paper weighted beneath it. In Maud's careful hand it read: Keep the field. Keep the cart. The rest was never ours to sell. He folded the note into his waistcoat and carried the stem home, and for weeks afterwards the scent of it stayed on his coat.
