Curved twig on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small curved twig with short, thin side sprigs is tattooed on the inner arm. The linework is fine and even, in dark ink with no shading. The tattoo sits alone on pale skin against a dark striped top and a dark floor, with the arm filling most of the frame.

Mind the step, it's loose, and it has been loose since your grandfather was a boy, and he never once mended it. Sit where the oven breathes. You want to know why the Pagnell girl came in at four with her hands wrapped in rag, and I'll tell you, though the dough won't wait for me to finish.

Her mother kept a bakehouse on the far side of the canal. One October the frost came early and the flour went damp in the sacks, and nobody in the town would give them yeast on credit. So the girl went out before light with a length of hawthorn she'd cut from the lane hedge. She bent it round her knee until it held the curve of a new moon, then tied a short sprig at each side so the rooks would know it was a thing somebody cared for. She nailed it above the door, and that was the whole of her magic, believe it or not.
The loaves rose that morning, as loaves do when someone is frightened enough to keep watching them. By seven the lane smelled of crust, and the men going to the mill stopped for bread they had no money for. Her mother counted the coins twice and found them short, and the girl said nothing, only wiped her hands on her apron and went back to the trough.
So here's the thing I always tell the apprentices. That twig is still up there, above the door of the shop that replaced hers. It has gone grey as a bone. And every dawn, before the first tray goes in, I touch it with a floury finger, and the oven takes the bread like it was expecting us.
