Small fine line black ink tattoo of a lavender sprig with leaves on the outer ankle, with another foot visible in the blurred background.

Fine line lavender sprig on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small sprig with a slender stem, several clustered buds and two curled leaves is tattooed on the outer ankle. The linework is thin and even, and the shading is minimal, so the design is rendered in single black lines. The skin tone is light and the background is softly out of focus, with another foot and a pink string bracelet visible behind the tattooed ankle.

Mind the step, the boards are rotten at the lip of the tent, and nobody here has money for timber. Sit where you can see the ring. That patch of sawdust is all that is left of the Marvelli Brothers, and the last of the brothers is the one who sells you the peanuts, so do not ask him about the elephants.

Lavender came into it the summer the big top leaked. Ada Corrin, who walked the wire for thirty years and never once looked down, had a habit of tucking a sprig behind her ear before every show. Her mother grew it in a tin on a windowsill in Margate, and every town we played smelt faintly of it after she had passed through. The buds were the only colour the crowd remembered in grey weather.

Then the wire snapped at Harrogate, and she came down into the sawdust with her arms out, and the sprig stayed up in the rigging. Nobody could reach it. Stubborn as ever, Ada climbed the ladder with a broom handle for three nights running, and on the third night she brought it down. It was dry as paper but whole, two curled leaves still clinging to the stem.

She pressed it in the back of the ledger, where the takings went. The show folded that winter. The ledger went to a pawnbroker in Leeds with everything else, and the sprig is still in there, if you know which page to open, and if the pawnbroker has not sold it on.
