Crescent moon with geometric detail on the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small crescent moon sits centrally on the back of the neck, with its inner curve drawn in fine lines. Within the circular boundary below the moon are dotwork shading, a diamond shape and triangular geometric linework. The tattoo is rendered entirely in black ink and greys against pale skin, with the subject's hair and a dark background framing the upper part of the photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the lamp, it smokes when the wind comes round, and you'll want to hear this before the watch changes. The moon was new the night the Halcyon Rose lost her mizzen, and Captain Ansel Dray sat on the hatch with a slate on his knee, drawing circles because he could not draw anything else.

He drew the crescent first, the way his mother had taught him, two arcs that never quite touched. Then he filled the round below it with dots, one for every star the sextant had failed to find that week. Between the dots he set a diamond, and inside the diamond a little triangle, and he said the triangle was the port they were making for, though none of us had ever seen it on a chart. The boy Pell asked what kind of port hides inside a moon. Dray said the kind that waits for men who can count their own dots.

Three days later the fog lifted and the crescent was lying on the horizon like a bent oar. We followed it. Pell swore the dots had shifted to make a path. Maybe they had. Maybe we were only tired enough to believe a slate.

We raised a harbour at dawn, a shallow one with no name, and Dray stepped ashore and never drew another circle. Pell kept the slate. Some nights he still traces the crescent on the rail with his thumb, counting dots under his breath, and tells the new hands the same thing: the moon is only a door, and the sea decides who passes through.
