Small let it be lettering on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of the lowercase words let it be sits on the upper back, close to the neck and shoulder. The letters are solid black in a simple typewriter-style face with even spacing, and the lines are clean with little visible shading. A gloved hand with a finger touching the skin beside the text suggests the photo was taken during the tattooing process, against a plain, softly lit background.

Dear Mr Harrow,

Your committee's plans for Carrow Tower arrived on Tuesday, and I have read them twice at the kitchen table with my tea going cold beside me. The architect wants the north wall rebuilt to its old height, the chapel roofed, and the moat cleared of the reeds that the herons have been nesting in since before my father was born. I understand the appeal. A castle with its roof on is easier to sell to the visitors coming up from Hexham and Carlisle.

Yet I have spent eleven winters walking those ruins with a clipboard, and I have come to think the stones know their own business better than we do. The window arches still frame the fells in the order they were cut. Last March a pair of jackdaws raised a brood in the gunloop of the old garderobe, and I could not bring myself to write them up as a hazard.

So my recommendation is short. Leave the north wall as it stands, cut back only the ivy that is prising the mortar apart, and put a bench by the postern gate where the light comes in at evening. Let the herons have the moat. Let the weather finish what it started, slowly, the way it always has.

Yours faithfully, Margaret Dunn Keeper of Carrow Tower
