Black blackletter lettering tattooed one letter per finger on two hands, resting on a dark leather surface.

Blackletter letters across fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest palm down on a dark leather surface, with single black letters tattooed on each finger in a blackletter script. The letters have solid, heavy outlines with simple shading and sit centred on the top of each finger. The plain dark background keeps the focus on the lettering.

The flowers arrived at the Marlow Hall loading bay forty minutes early, which meant the caterer had already rung twice and the vicar's wife was pacing the car park with a clipboard held like a hymn book. You sign for the delivery with a biro that has run dry, borrow one from the florist, and tell yourself that plans are only plans until someone sits on them.

The morning goes wrong in small, ordinary ways. The string quartet is stuck behind a lorry on the M4. The bride's grandmother wants the top table moved so she can see the door. The groom has lost his cufflinks, then found them in the pocket of the waistcoat he is already wearing. You fix what you can with gaffer tape and a muttered list, and by eleven the marquee smells of cut stems and warm sponge and somebody's cheap aftershave.

At half past twelve the quartet arrives, sweating and cross, and the rain holds off just long enough for the vows. Nobody notices the bulb that failed over the cake table or the seating card that says Aunt Pat in someone else's handwriting. Your notebook sits open on a chair at the back, its first page still filled with the timetable you drew up in January, every line ticked except the last one, which you wrote as a joke and never crossed out.

Afterwards the bride finds you by the bins, shoes in one hand, and asks whether everything went to plan. You look at the ruined seating chart, the sodden lawn, the groom dancing with his mother in a way no spreadsheet would have allowed. You tell her it went exactly to plan, and it is only later, folding the chairs alone, that you realise you meant it.
