Black and grey fine line cross with the word Strength in script running down the vertical bar, tattooed on the upper back.

Strength script cross on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black cross sits centrally on the upper back, with the word Strength written in cursive script along its vertical bar and short solid horizontal arms. The linework is fine and even, with minimal shading, and the skin tone and surrounding background are shown in black and grey. The cross is placed near the centre of the frame between the shoulder blades, with a fine chain visible at the neck.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Okonedo never let the apprentice touch the lettering until the cross was square. "Stone forgives nothing," he said, tapping the Portland block with his mallet, "but it forgives a crooked line less than anything." So Tomasz spent three weeks on the rough shoulders of the thing, learning to read the grain the way a man reads a face.

The widow came on a Tuesday with a folded scrap of paper in her glove. She wanted one word cut along the upright, in the looping hand her husband had used on birthday cards. Okonedo read it, said nothing for a while, then handed Tomasz the fine chisels and the bag of sand.

Tomasz worked the letters with a point no thicker than a hair. Each curl of the S had to be pecked, not struck, or the stone would break away at the joins. Twice he ruined an f, and twice Okonedo made him sit with the spoiled piece on his knee until the sting of it wore off. By the end of the second week his wrists ached, and the word ran the full height of the cross, thin and unbroken, catching the low sun across the churchyard.

When the widow came back she didn't cry. She ran one finger down the letters, then up again, the way you check a seam. "He always said the hard part was the waiting," she said. "I'll tell him you got it right." Tomasz wiped the sand from his fingers and watched her walk away between the yews, the paper still folded in her palm.
