Small love script with paw print on a finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a small black tattoo of the word love in a loose, joined script, with a paw print to the right. The linework is thin and solid, with no shading, and the ink is crisp against the skin. The finger fills the frame diagonally, with a second hand resting across the foreground and soft light falling from the lower centre.

The last dog aboard Tessaly Reach was called Mossy, and you are the only one left who knows the sound she made when the airlock cycled. Nobody else bothered to learn it. The council had voted her out of the manifest eleven years before, in the same session that cut the choir and the orchard, so she lived in the spare cargo bay behind the seed vault, fed on protein paste you swapped for your own shift credits.

You remember the first time she came to you, a scrap of grey fur wedged in a crate of pipe fittings. The maintenance drones logged her as contraband and then, quietly, stopped logging her at all. Your mother used to say that the old Earth dogs left prints in everything, mud on the galley floor, nose smears on the glass, and that a ship without a paw print was just a tin with lights in it. You thought she was being sentimental. You were wrong about that, as it turned out, which is a thing you have had to admit more often than you would like.
The bay was scheduled for venting on the twelfth cycle. You had two days and a forged transfer form that would not survive scrutiny. On the last night you took her up to the observation blister, where the glass was so cold it furred over at the edges, and you lifted her forepaw onto the pane. She left a print in the frost, four pads and a smudge, the way she always had on the galley hatch.
You did not have the words for what you wanted to say, so you wrote the one you did have. You drew it in the rime with a fingertip, slow, the letters running into one another as your hand moved: love. Beside it you pressed her paw again, so that the mark and the animal would sit together against the dark outside. When the council's alarm finally sounded in the corridor, the word was still there, pale and imperfect, and you did not wipe it away.
