A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody at Sallow Gap would give a stranger water without first hearing what he meant to carry across the flats, and the word had to be written on him where the sun could not wash it off. So when Tobiah Rendell came in off the Kessick road with his canteen split at the seam, the widow at the well asked him for his word, and he said love, and she laughed at him for choosing something so small to walk twelve days with.

She gave him a thorn and a pot of lamp black anyway. He wrote the word down the side of his first finger, looping the letters tight so they would hold. The road was white and shimmering and the wind took the dust off the ridges in long grey sheets. Each night he sat with the finger in the lamplight and checked that the letters were still there. At the dry lake a salt-hauler offered him a cup for nothing, and Tobiah had to lift the hand to thank him, and the man read the word and asked whose it was. Tobiah could not answer that, so he only drank.

He reached the coast town on the twelfth morning with the canteen empty and the word still black and even. His sister kept a salt house by the harbour and had not seen him in nine years. She did not know his face, but she took his hand to pull him inside out of the glare, and her thumb went over the letters before she looked at him at all.

The widow's rule, when Tobiah wrote to her years later, was that a word carried is a word paid for. He kept the finger clean and never let anyone wash it for him.
