Sit down, sit down, you'll not hear the end of it standing by the urn. You want the one about Edith and the Tuesday waltz, the one the bandleader swore was true because he was there, and he was never anywhere he wasn't paid to be.

The hall on Marlow Street had a floor sprung on horsehair, and every Tuesday a man called Walter Pinder wound up the gramophone for the last waltz. Edith came in wearing her sister's coat and not much to say. She danced with a sailor off the Humber boats, and each time the tune came round to its start, they were back where they had begun, turning round and round like a figure of eight laid on its side, never getting any further from the door.

Walter noticed the chalk. After the last waltz, somebody drew a small heart on the boards by the stage, then a loop beside it that ran off the edge of the floor, and then a short stroke underneath, pointing down at the sprung wood. One night he stopped the record early, lifted the arm himself, and found the chalk still soft. Edith's left glove was lying on the sill. She had been drawing it with her finger while the sailor fetched her lemonade.

The sailor shipped out on the Monday after, and Edith kept on coming. Walter never learnt whether that loop meant forever or only a long walk home, but the needle came down at nine every Tuesday, and that little downward stroke is still there under the stage if you care to look. Mind the step, now. The lights are going up.
