Our Dennis swore the pizza in the Bellavista on Tanner Street was the only honest thing in Hackney, and he'd say it every Friday while the ovens ticked over behind the counter. Nobody argued. You didn't argue with Dennis when he had a cardboard box balanced on his knee and a slice halfway to his mouth. He'd fold it lengthways, the way his nan taught him, and the cheese would go stringy and slide off the point like it had somewhere better to be.

The spring the council shut the lane, Dennis lost his bike, his flat and most of his temper, in that order. Then one Tuesday he turned up at the shop with a bag of tools from the pawn place and asked old Sal if she still had the bit of pepperoni she'd been saving since Christmas. She said she didn't, so he settled for a slice of plain, and he sat on the step outside eating it in the rain, looking as if he'd been handed a fiver by a stranger.

We thought he'd gone soft in the head. Then in June he showed up at the pub in a vest, lifted his shirt on the side and there it was, a small outlined slice with cheese running down its crust in drips, three dots for toppings, the lot done in the finest black line you ever saw. Nobody said a word. Sal reached over and tapped it once, like a bell on a counter.

"Right," Dennis said, pulling his shirt back down. "Now you lot owe me a Friday."
