Shark tooth tattoo on the side of the chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline of a shark tooth sits on the side of the upper chest, below the armpit. The linework is thin and the tooth is shaded in grey with a few darker accents. The photo is a casual selfie-style shot of a woman in a grey tank top with her hand on her hip, and the tattoo is the only part of the design in focus.

Dear Margit, the tooth is still in my coat pocket, wrapped in the oilcloth you gave me the week before the boat went out. I found it on the shingle at Kessock last Tuesday, after the wind turned and the tide left the whole bay bare as a plate. It was the size of my thumbnail, black on one side and grey on the other, with a serrated edge sharp enough to open my palm when I tested it, which I did, like a fool.

The harbourmaster says it came off a big female, probably dragged in on the nets off Rattray. He says they shed teeth the way a hedge sheds leaves, a whole row of them always coming forward to replace the last. I told him that sounded like a lot of waste for one animal, and he laughed and said that was the point, nothing in the sea is ever short of a spare.

I have been thinking about that since. The ink man in Inverness asked me whether I wanted it outlined or filled, and I said outlined, because I wanted it to look like something that had been lost and kept, not something that was still biting. He drew it on tracing paper first, then pressed it to my skin and asked me to look in the mirror. It sat there small and grey, a little crooked, as if it had only just come to rest.

When you come up in April, bring the good thread. I will show you the tooth and the place where it sits, and you can tell me whether I should have kept the other one too.
