Three birds on the upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A person with blonde hair is seen from behind, showing three small black bird silhouettes in flight on the upper back near the shoulder blade. The lines are simple and minimal, with solid black ink and no shading. The soft, natural light and plain pale background keep the focus on the tattoo.

Don't you stop me now, I'm coming to the birds. Three of them, sat on the forestay the morning we lost sight of the Azores, and the third mate swore they were counting us, the way a bosun counts a watch. Nobody believed him. Terns, the captain said, blown off course and bad-tempered with it, same as the rest of us.

Fourteen days we ran west with the casks gone green and the biscuit turning to grit between your teeth. Cook's boy, Tobias Finch, a freckled thing from Penzance, took it upon himself to count those birds every dawn and chalk the number on the mainmast. Three, three, three. Each morning the chalk was a comfort, and each morning the captain looked at it like a debt.

Then the squall came off the Banks and took the foresail clean away, and we were all of us bailing and cursing and praying in equal measure. When the sea laid down again, the birds were gone. Tobias went white as a sheet and said the count was broken, and that was the worst thing anyone had said aboard in a month.

But on the fifteenth morning there they were, low over the swell, wings set stiff, and they wheeled north-east in a long loop and flew straight back across our bow. Tobias ran to the rail. The captain turned the ship after them, grumbling, and by dusk we smelled the land, and by midnight we were in the lee of a headland that had no business being there.

Now, the birds? I'll tell you what I think. They weren't leading us home. They were only going where they were going, and we were fool enough to follow. Tobias still keeps that chalk tally in a tin in Penzance. Three marks, every morning, and the last one never rubbed out.
