Small outline heart on the chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small, thin black outline of a heart sits low on the chest, between the breasts, just above the bikini top. The linework is single and even with no shading, and the ink is crisp against the skin. The composition is tight, with the tattoo centred in the lower part of the frame, while hands and bracelets cover much of the upper chest and a gold necklace hangs above.

Brother Anselm had been ruling lines since Lauds, and his hand had begun to shake in the way the infirmarian warned him about. He set the quill down on the lectern and rubbed the ink from his second finger with a rag that smelled of linseed. Outside the scriptorium window the Fen mist sat on the reeds like wet wool, and somewhere below the cloister a bell rang for Terce, flat and patient.

The psalter on his desk was the last commission the house would take before the cold closed the river roads. Abbot Osric had insisted on plain initials, no gold leaf, no beasts climbing the borders, because the Bishop's man had complained about the expense. So Anselm worked in black and red, and kept each stroke to a single pull of the pen, the way his master had taught him at Ely. Shading, Osric said, was vanity that bled through the vellum.
When the last psalm was copied he took up the pen once more, though no rubric asked for anything. In the bottom margin of the final leaf, low on the page and nearly hidden by the gutter, he drew a small heart. It was one unbroken line, thin as a hair, with no colour inside it and no shadow to give it weight. He blotted it and waited, feeling foolish, for the ink to dry.
Osric came in at Compline with his lamp and his scowl, checking the work. He turned the leaves slowly and stopped at the last one. He bent close, long enough that Anselm began to compose an apology, and then he made a sound that might have been a cough. He closed the book without a word and left the heart exactly where it was.
