Small crown tattoo on middle finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on a bare thigh above a teal garment, with white nail polish on the fingertips. A small black crown outline with short hanging lines below it sits on the middle finger. The thin, single-weight linework and plain black ink suggest a minimal fine line piece, and the tight crop keeps the focus on the tattoo and hand.

Brother Anselm kept the candles at the house of Saint Withy, on the moor above the river, and he had a rule that no wax was wasted. When the old king's crown was sent up the hill to be mended, the goldsmith melted the silver down and lost the stones in the crucible, and the monks were told to make do. So Anselm took the good tallow and a bent wire of copper and set to work in the cold cell beside the bell rope.

He made the crown no bigger than a barley grain, all points and small spikes, and he dipped it again and again so the wax ran down its edges in long tears that hardened as they fell. When the abbot came to see it, he laughed and said a crown that drips would not last a winter. Anselm only said that everything in the house dripped eventually, and that was why they kept it in a dish of sand.
The king rode up at midsummer, wanting his crown back and saying he would have the monks flogged for their cheek. Anselm brought out the wax one on a square of linen. The king put it on to show the monks what a proper crown looked like, and he walked into the chapel wearing it. The sun came through the high window and softened it, and by the time the psalms ended a single bead of wax had run down his brow. He stood there with his face wet and his head bare and said nothing for a long while.
The king left the wax crown with the monks and asked that it be kept somewhere cool. Anselm's dish of sand still sits on the windowsill, and in every warm spring a fresh drop still forms on one of the little points and falls into the sand.
