Fine line outline of a small heart tattoo on the lower abdomen, just above white lace underwear.

Small outline heart on the lower abdomen

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small heart drawn as a single thin black outline sits on the lower abdomen, to the side of the navel. The linework is even and delicate, with no shading or fill inside the shape. The pale skin, white satin and lace underwear fill the frame, and the heart is the only dark mark, so it stands out clearly.

The reunion was held in the sports hall of our old school, because nobody had thought to book anywhere else. Someone had pinned a banner up with our leaving year on it, and the paper cups of squash tasted exactly as they had in 1996. I found Gemma Ruddock by the trestle table, arguing with a man about whether the caretaker had been called Mr Rhys or Mr Price.

Miss Hollis used to stamp outline hearts in our exercise books when we'd got something right. One thin line, never coloured in. She said colour was for the ones who'd finished. Years later, at the back of her funeral, I was holding a cup of tea when Gemma leaned in and said, "You never coloured yours in either." I didn't know what she meant until she pulled out a battered spelling book from her handbag, the one with the wobbly heart from a Year Four test that we had both kept, somehow, for thirty years.

We sat on the bench under the climbing ropes and talked about who had gone where. Gemma had two boys and a bakery in Stroud. I had a flat above a chip shop and a job I didn't mention. She said she'd always thought the hearts meant you were still waiting for something. I said maybe they meant you hadn't decided yet.

When the caretaker flicked the lights at half ten, I took a biro from my coat and drew one more heart on the back of the programme and left it empty. Gemma laughed and said it was the most Hollis thing I had ever done. I folded the programme into my pocket and walked out past the ropes into the car park, still holding it.
