Small palm tree tattoo on the buttock
Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A woman lies face down on a patterned blue towel on a sandy beach, with her back and hair toward the camera and dark rock behind her. A small black palm tree is tattooed on her right buttock, drawn with simple, solid lines. The palette is mostly warm skin tones, sand and a red bikini, with the tattoo as the only ink.

Dear Tom,

You will not believe what the tide brought in on Tuesday. I was out at the rock pools before the mist lifted, poking at the weed the way you used to, when something brown and round rolled against my boot like a dog wanting attention. A coconut, Tom. Hairy, cracked and sea-bleached, wedged in the sand at the foot of the big black rock as though someone had posted it. Mr Pascoe at the post office says they drift up from the Caribbean on the Gulf Stream, though I have never known him to be right about anything that grows.
I planted it above the high-water line in the lee of the rock, in the hollow I dug for the rose that died. Three weeks on, a green spear has come up through the husk. Mrs Hocking says it will never survive a Cornish winter and that I am a fool. Perhaps. But I sit out there each afternoon with my tea and watch it lean into the wind as if it has business to attend to.
The council man came round on Thursday with a clipboard and a face like a wet Sunday, saying the dunes are protected and nothing may be planted on them. I asked him what he supposed had been growing there before the sea arrived, and he had no answer, so he wrote something down and left.
By noon the shadow it throws is the size of a kitchen table. I have started bringing the old blue towel down and lying in it, the way we lay on the sand at Dunmore when Father was alive. You always said I would never be brave enough to go anywhere. Come and see it, Tom. Bring the good sunhat. I'll keep the shade for you.
