The last rose on the seawall had gone to hip by the time the spring tides reached the old pier, and Ines knelt in the wet sand with a trowel, digging for the cutting her grandmother had buried there forty years before. Nothing grew straight in the salt now. The garden had moved inland twice and crept back again, and the maps in the cabin were mostly pencil guesses.

Her grandmother had kept a ledger of roses in the back of a tide almanac, each variety drawn in black ink and shaded grey where the petals folded over. Ines learned to read those drawings before she learned her letters. Dog rose, Gallica, a cabbage rose that smelled of pepper and rain. She knew them the way the old sailors knew a coast, by the shadows they threw on the page and the ones they left out.

The cutting was wrapped in oilcloth at the base of the wall, pale and stubborn, with one bud still closed tight as a fist. She carried it home in both hands, past the drowned greenhouse and the rusted gate that still said Private in faded paint. Her grandmother had written that roses remember the ground they were first planted in, and Ines had never believed it until the roots pressed white against the tin.

She set it in a dented tin of rainwater on the sill. By dusk the bud had opened a finger's width, pink at the edges and grey in the folds, and the wind had turned off the sea and carried the smell of pepper inland. Ines wrote the date in the almanac under her grandmother's last entry and drew the rose herself, shading it carefully where the light fell.
