Small quote tattoo on upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with her hair in a loose bun is seen from behind, sitting in water against a bamboo backdrop. Two lines of small, typewriter-style lettering sit across her upper back, reading as a quote. The image is black and white, with fine, crisp letterforms and a simple, centred composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mrs Okafor's typewriter came to Ada Lowther's counter on a Tuesday with its carriage jammed and a sheet still curled in the platen, so Ada had to ease it out with a butter knife before she could do anything else. The page had two lines on it, typed slowly, the second one a little crooked as if the typist had been leaning away from the keys.

Ada had mended machines for forty years above a chemist's on Crook Street, and she knew the difference between a letter someone meant to send and one they typed to keep their hands busy. This was the second kind. Someone had written the words, then written them again, then left the page in the drum for a fortnight while the rest of the house went quiet around it.
Ada spent the evening freeing the escapement and brushing twenty years of dust from the type bars. When she finished she rolled in a fresh sheet and typed the lines back out, letter by letter, the way the old machine liked them to sit. Then she wrote a note in pencil on the back of the job card and clipped it to the handle for the morning.
The woman came for it at nine, paid in coins, and read the note standing at the counter. It said only: Works now. The story's yours to finish.
