Small rabbit tattoo on the lower back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a small rabbit seated upright in profile, with its ears laid back and its front legs tucked against its chest. The rabbit is outlined in dark grey with soft grey shading across its body and ears, giving it a gentle, three-dimensional look. The tattoo sits centrally on bare skin above the waistband of dark denim, against a plain, softly blurred background.

Dear Lorraine,

I nearly didn't come to the reunion, and then I saw the list pinned in the Co-op with your name still spelt with two Rs, and I thought, Lorraine would never let me hide. So I'm writing to you instead of finding you in the hall, which I suppose is the coward's version.

Do you remember the rabbit behind the cricket pavilion, the autumn we skipped double maths? It wasn't running. That was what got me. Every other creature on Hartley Bottom bolted at the sound of a gate, but this one sat bolt upright in the long grass with its ears laid flat along its back, as if someone had told it to wait and it had decided to take the instruction seriously.

We sat on the bench and waited with it. You said it was waiting for a bus. I said it was waiting for its mother. We argued until the bell went, and neither of us ever went back to check who was right.

At the reunion Mr Pryce asked what I'd done with my life, and I said I'd mostly been sitting still, waiting for something to tell me to move. He laughed. You didn't. You just looked at me the way you looked at that rabbit, as if you were deciding whether I was worth a bit more stillness.

I'm walking down to the bus shelter on Hartley Road now. If you want to finish the argument, I'll be on the bench, and I'll wait.

Love, Jen
