Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant is tattooed in shaded grey ink, shown in profile walking to the left with its trunk raised high. The body is filled with soft grey tones and fine detail on the ears, legs and trunk, giving it a dimensional look. It sits on warm skin in the centre of the frame, with a grey waistband visible at the bottom edge.

The fog had sat on the Skerrow rocks for three days when Ada Pennick heard the trumpet. It came low across the water, a sound like a ship's horn that had forgotten how to be a ship, and she set down the paraffin can and climbed the iron stairs two at a time to the gallery.

Below, in the grey, something was wading through the shallows. First the head, broad as a coal scuttle, then the great flapping ears, then the trunk held straight up over the surf like a man signalling for a boat. The tide had taken the circus barge onto the reef the night before. Ada had watched its lamps go out one by one, and had lit her own beam twice as bright, and it had made no difference to the sea.

She fetched the rope from the store and went down the rocks with the keeper's boy, Tom, who was twelve and shouting about the size of it. The animal did not panic. It walked up onto the shingle with the calm of something that had walked a great deal further than this, shook itself dry, and turned towards the lighthouse as though it knew where the lamp was.

When the fog lifted and the barge men came along the coast road for their beast, Ada stood with a bucket of fresh water while the elephant drank. The men called it Mabel. Ada did not argue. She watched the trunk lift and curl, reaching for the sky the way her lamp reached for ships, and that night she left the light burning though nothing was out on the water to see it.
