Small rabbit and crescent moon tattoo
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo shows a rabbit face with long ears and two dot eyes, placed beside a thin crescent moon. The linework is clean and single weight with no shading, and the ink is black on pale skin against a dark background. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame, with a patterned fabric strap crossing the lower left edge.

The hare kept her ears up all winter, though nobody in Moss End could say why. When the millers came down from the hill with their carts, she would sit on the wall by the old well and count the lamps in the windows, one, two, up to the last one, and then she would look at the moon as though it owed her money.

One night the moon was only a paring, thin as a fingernail, and the hare was waiting for the bell at the chapel to ring nine. Mrs Harrow from the lower farm came by with a bucket and asked what she was doing out so late. The hare said she was keeping the moon company until it grew fat again, because a moon left alone too long forgets which way is up. Mrs Harrow laughed and said moons did not forget anything, they simply went round and round. The hare said that was exactly what made them forgetful.
The next morning the well was full of frost and the bucket was found upside down on the wall. Some say the hare took the moon down with her to the water to wash it. Others say the moon took her up to see the village from above, and that she still sits there with her long ears bent over the rooftops, waiting for the lamps to go out one by one so she can tell them apart from the stars.
