Fine line tattoo of a hare inside a dotted-edged frame with a small teacup, in dark blue ink on the forearm.

Hare in a framed panel on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hare with long upright ears looks out from a rectangular frame with a dotted border, and a small teacup sits at the lower edge of the panel. The linework is fine and engraving-like, with the fur built up from dense hatching and short strokes. The design is rendered in a single dark blue-black ink on a forearm, with a stack of bangles below it.

Sit yourselves down and mind the teacup, it isn't for knocking over. You see that hare on the board above the door, framed up like a bill for a hanging? He was not always so fine. Old Hob Marrow painted him in the hard winter when the river froze at Ely and the fair was stuck fast for nine weeks with nothing to sell but hot chestnuts and gossip.

The hare was called Tobias, and he belonged to nobody, which was the trouble. Every morning he came to the frosted caravan steps and sat up on his hind legs, ears straight as a magistrate's pen, waiting for someone to pour him tea. Hob never had the heart to refuse. He set out a cup from his sister's wedding set, the one with the chipped gold rim, and the hare drank it slowly while the fair folk watched through their breath. Nobody had ever seen a hare drink tea before. Nobody has since, and that's proof enough for me.

Then the thaw came, and the fair rolled on to King's Lynn, and Hob went with it. The hare did not follow. Hob came back the next year, and the year after, and each time he set one cup on the step. Each time the cup was empty by morning, and Hob never once saw him go.

So when you hand me your pennies, mind that little cup at the bottom of the frame. It's still warm if you touch it. Next.
