Small rose on an inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small rose in open bloom sits on the inner forearm, drawn with delicate single-needle style linework and light shading on the petals. The tattoo is in black ink only, with the petals outlined and softened with fine hatching. The subject fills a small central area of the frame against a plain grey background and dark clothing.

The roses along the back wall of my grandmother's allotment never bloomed on time. They sulked through April and then, overnight, they opened all at once, as if someone had given them a sharp word. I was nine the summer I decided to save the one called Mrs Pritchard from the greenfly, and I spent a whole week on my knees with a jar of soapy water and a paintbrush, scrubbing each leaf like it owed me money.

Gran watched from the potting shed with her tea going cold on the bench. She never told me I was wasting my time. She only said that a rose opens because it is tired of waiting, and that a bud left too long on the stem will sometimes fall before it has decided anything at all.
On the last morning of the holidays the bloom was perfect, a cupped thing of petals folded inside petals, the centre tight as a fist. I cut it for the kitchen table. Gran pressed a sheet of greaseproof paper over the dew on it and then, very carefully, sketched the outline in pencil on the back of a seed packet while I ate my toast. She didn't draw the whole flower. She drew just enough to let me find my way back to it.
I still have that packet. The rose on the wall came down years ago, in a hard frost, but I know exactly where it stood.
