The porter at Tyndrum Halt says the Scots pine by the water tank is older than the line itself, though he is the sort who says things like that to pass the time between trains. I went and looked at it on Thursday while the 4.15 idled for its right of way. Someone had ringed its base with a loop of whitewashed stones, and inside the ring the needles have gone the colour of rust, which Mr Abercrombie says is the tree's way of getting ready for winter.
