Torso in a black lace bralette and leather jacket, with a small red lettering tattoo on the forearm near the hand.

Small script lettering on forearm beside lace bralette

Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A close crop of a torso wearing a black sheer lace bralette under an open black leather jacket, with one hand resting on the hip. A small tattoo of handwritten script in red ink sits on the forearm near the wrist, and its words are too small to read clearly. The lace has a dense floral pattern against a soft, neutral skin tone, and the composition is centred on the chest.

Mags had the lace frame running before the light was up, the bobbins clacking like a bad clock, and she did not look round when her brother came in with the post. Read it to me, she said. Don't tell me it's from the council. Tom turned the envelope over. The postmark was Calais and the paper was thin as onion skin, the hand inside small and red, squeezed into the margins as if the writer had been paying by the letter.

He read it slowly. The ferry was late and the sea was the colour of her bobbins. They had taken the big frame to the works in Calais, but she had kept the pattern Mags drew her, the one with the rose inside the shield, and she would sew it onto whatever she was wearing when she came home. Mags stopped the wheel. Her hands stayed on the spindles. She always did put too much in the margins, she said. Keep reading.

He read until the paper ran out, then read the last line again, the one written sideways up the edge: the leather is for the road, the lace is for you. Mags laughed once and went back to work. By the time the sun reached the window she had cut a length of black net the width of a hand and begun, stitch by stitch, to copy the rose onto it, so that whoever came through the door next would find her sister's pattern waiting, and the red ink would not need to explain itself.
