Fine line heart and letter tattoos on skin
Fine line · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A close crop of a woman wearing a white V-neck top, a black lace bralette and layered metal necklaces. A thin black outline heart sits on the upper chest, and a small letter tattoo inside a circle, in blue ink, is visible on the upper arm at the right edge. The composition is soft and warm, with the lace and necklaces filling the centre of the frame.

By the time we reached the cairn at the top my fingers had gone the colour of candle wax, and I had stopped feeling the letters through the oilcloth.

The one I remember was addressed in pencil to a shepherd's widow called Agnes Ferrier, at the last farm before the drop. The envelope had no stamp, only a small heart drawn in thin black ink in one corner, and on the flap someone had pressed a capital A inside a ring. I asked the postmaster in the valley why anyone would post a letter like that. He said the sender had paid in mutton and wanted it carried by hand.
Agnes was at her door before I'd tied Brisket to the post. She didn't invite me in, only held out her hand, and I gave her the letter and stood in the wind while she read it twice. Then she laughed, a dry sound like a gate swinging, and asked whether I had ever wanted anything badly enough to walk the long way round for it.
I said no. She folded the letter small, put it in her apron pocket and went back inside. Going down, Brisket stopped at the cairn and would not move until I had placed a stone on it for whoever had sent it, and when I looked back the snow was already filling in my footprints.
