Small script tattoo on a woman's upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman stands with her back to the camera in a dark bodycon skirt, one arm raised to her head beneath a lit crystal chandelier. A small block of fine dark script sits between her shoulder blades, too small and soft to read clearly. The monochrome photograph has a plain interior setting with a mirrored table, candlesticks and dark floorboards.

Dear Ruth, Mr Penhale's house on Carrow Terrace finally let me in through the front door, which is more than the last firm managed. He wants the great chandelier in the drawing room taken down, every drop lifted, washed in warm vinegar and hung back before Thursday's dinner. I told him it would take two days. He said one, and that his guests would never notice a missing crystal, only a dim room. So I have spent the morning on a stepladder with a bucket and a box of cotton wool, counting prisms the way Father used to count pennies on the kitchen table.

Halfway through the third arm I found a drop that was not quite like the others. It was a shade heavier, with a line of writing cut into its face so fine I had to carry it to the window to read it. Two words and a letter: Keep it lit, T.A. Our grandfather's initial, Ruth. I would know that T anywhere, it is the same cross-bar he gave every bottle he ever signed. The glasshouse that made this chandelier shut its doors in 1911, the same year it was hung.
Mrs Gale, who has kept this house since before the war, says nobody here has ever asked about the candles on the sideboard. A girl lights them every evening at dusk and blows them out at ten, and she will not say why. I did not ask Mrs Gale either. I only asked whether the candles were lit for the chandelier's sake, and she laughed and said the chandelier had never needed any help.
I hung the marked drop back in the third arm, where the light catches it first, and sent Mr Penhale my bill. Tomorrow I will take the ladder back up and clean the last of the arms. Tell Father the light is still ours.
