Create script tattoo on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind, wearing a white crochet bikini and standing on a sandy beach with a green headland behind her. A small black script word, create, sits on her upper arm, drawn in thin, even linework with no shading. The ink is solid black against tanned skin, and the tattoo is a small focal point against the soft background.

Sit down, all of you, before the tea goes cold, because I am going to tell you about the word on the blackboard. Not one of you ever read it properly, and that is my fault as much as anyone's. Every Monday for thirty-one years, Mr Harcourt wrote a single word across the top of the board before the bell, in thin joined-up script, and every Monday I was too busy flicking paint at Gary Pike to look up. The word was create.

Dennis the caretaker wanted it wiped off. He said it was showing off, a word too big for a Tuesday. Harcourt only smiled and said nothing could be made from nothing, and he set a lump of grey clay in front of the smallest boy in the room, young Tom Pargeter, and told him to get on with it. Tom made a lopsided bird that night and came in the next morning with it wrapped in a tea towel, very proud and very worried it would crack.

The year they pulled the old building down, the board went out to the skip with the broken desks. Dennis hauled it back in the rain because he could not bear to see it go. When he turned it over, the word was there underneath the chalk, scratched into the wood. Not once, but a hundred times, in a hundred wobbly hands, every child who had ever copied it from the top of the board.

So when you walk out of this hall tonight, look at your hands. Some of you have built houses with them and some have only mended the odd thing, but the word was never meant for the board. It was meant for the wood underneath.
