Small script word tattoo on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's bare side and ribs are shown, with her hand resting on her torso and a patterned long-sleeved top pulled aside. A small black script word sits on the ribs, with bold, slightly brushed lettering and a few decorative strokes. The plain light grey background keeps the focus on the tattoo and the soft shading of the skin.

Your mother came into the shop on Tuesday with the carriage clock wrapped in a tea towel, and she set it on my bench as if it might go off. I told her the mainspring was sound. The real trouble was the escapement, filed by someone who had never sat still long enough to understand brass. I did not tell her that I knew the hand that had done it, because it was mine, thirty years ago, in my uncle's workroom above the fishmonger's on Marrow Lane.

You asked me in March why I let you handle the good tools before you could name them. Here is the answer I should have given you then. A tool you have not been trusted with teaches you only to be careful. A tool you have been trusted with teaches you what the work costs, and that is the lesson that keeps your fingers steady when nobody is watching. Mr Dacre will come for the clock on Friday. Give him the receipt in pencil, not ink, because he always asks for a discount and I would rather he had the satisfaction of arguing with a number he can rub out.
I am handing you the key to the front door this week. Do not make a speech about it. I have watched you flinch every time the bell over the door rings, as though someone is about to tell you off, and I want you to stop doing that. The shop is yours to open at eight.
When you lock up, leave the bench lamp on for a minute, then switch it off. I will know it was you from the way you leave the drawer open a finger's width, the way I taught you, so the wood can breathe.
