A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tabby had taken to sitting on the bottom step of the chapel stair, facing the harbour, and nobody in Porthgwidden had the heart to shift it. It did not mew or pace the way cats do when they want feeding. It sat with its striped front paws tucked neatly under its chest and watched the grey water until the light went out on the rocks. Mrs Ruan from the bakery brought it a saucer of milk each morning, and each evening the saucer came back full, which she decided meant the cat was keeping its own counsel.

In February the Esperance failed to come back past Gull Rock. Four men were out with the wind rising, and the women gathered at the top of the lane with their shawls pulled tight. The cat did not join them. It stayed on its step, calm as a stone, while the lamps were lit one by one along the quay. Old Jacka said it was the worst sign he had ever seen, and the younger men told him to hush and go home.

Near midnight a lantern came round the point, then another, and the boat limped into the slip with its sail in rags and all four men alive and swearing. The cat rose at last, stretched each leg in turn, and walked down the steps as though it had only been waiting for the kettle to boil.

Mrs Ruan found the saucer on the step the next morning, licked clean for once and set neatly beside the chapel door. She filled it again, and it was empty by noon.
