Small line drawn face on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a minimal face sits on the side of a lower leg, just above a knitted ankle sock. The face is drawn with thin, single black lines for a closed or winking eye with lashes, a nose and lips. The black and white photograph is framed against a plain light background, with the dark trouser hem at the top of the frame.

The carrier who ran the salt road between Ghadra and the coast had a habit of talking to milestones. Nobody thought much of it until the spring the wind scoured the lettering off the forty-third stone, and Tamsin Oyelaran, who kept the rest-house at the bend, walked out with a chisel and a bucket of lime to set it right.

She found the stone already cracked and half buried in drift. Where the numbers had been she carved a face instead: one eye lowered as if sizing up the sun, a small straight nose, lips pressed flat and patient. She worked quickly, grit blowing into her collar, because the mule was restless and the heat was rising off the road like water.

Travellers began to stop at forty-three. A drover from the east swore the face had winked at him at dusk. A girl selling dates said its mouth had moved when the wind dropped. Tamsin said nothing about it. She kept the lime bucket full and let them believe what they liked, since a road with a witness on it is harder to lose.

Years later the highway was re-laid and the stone was lifted onto a flatbed for a museum yard in the city. The carrier's grandson went to see it on a grey afternoon. He stood a long while with his hands in his pockets, then lowered one eyelid at it, because that was the custom on the salt road, and the stone, which had never done anything at all, seemed to lower its own.
