Small sitting dog on upper back
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
A small line drawing of a sitting dog or cat sits between the shoulder blades of a person seen from behind, with their hair in a bun and a blue halter top tied at the neck. The linework is thin and mostly black, with a small red accent near the animal's body. The background is a grey sea and sky, and the tattoo sits in the centre of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The dog came back again last night, the one with the ragged ear, and sat down square in the middle of the forecourt as if it had booked the bay. I've stopped shooing it. Mrs Okafor from the motel says it belongs to nobody, which is what they said about me when I turned up in March in a Vauxhall that smoked like a kipper.
Every evening it sits facing east, the way the lorries come off the ridge with their lights swinging like fishing boats. Nobody comes that way since the bypass opened, so I can't work out what it's waiting for. I leave a bowl of water by the pump and a bit of cold gammon wrapped in foil, and it eats with its back to me, which I take as a lesson in manners.
Yesterday a crowd of motorbikes stopped for diesel and one of the lads knelt down and tried to get it to shake paws. It wouldn't. It just looked past him at the road, a little red ribbon of something at its neck catching the last of the sun. When they'd gone it was still there, upright and neat, like the only thing on that stretch that knew the way home.
I don't think it's waiting for anyone. I think it's keeping the place open, same as me. Come out at Easter if the car behaves and sit with it at sunset, and then tell me I'm daft to your face.
Love, Jo
