The chart had come back from the printers with the wrong coastline, and Mabel Renshaw had until the Thursday tide to put it right. She knelt on the wet sand below Gullane Point with a tin of pencils and a folded sheet, measuring the bay against the sky. Across the water the far range stood up grey and sharp, the way it only did after rain, three peaks higher than the middle one and a notch between them where the snow held longest.

Harold, the printer's man, had asked her why she bothered drawing mountains on a map of a harbour. She told him the fishermen steered by them, which was true, and that she had once promised her father she would never leave out the high ground, which was not something she repeated. He laughed and said the sea did not care for ridgelines. Mabel did not argue. She simply kept the lines.

By the time the light went copper she had the bay right: the breakwater, the three lighthouse cottages, the sandbar that shifted every spring. The last thing was the range. She drew it quickly in the thin dark strokes her father had taught her, shading the shoulders of each peak with the side of the lead so the snow looked like weather. Then she stood, brushed the grit from her coat, and watched the tide come up over the place where she had knelt, filling the prints one by one until the shore was smooth again.
