Dreamcatcher with mandala on upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A woman in a grey polka dot bikini stands with her back to the camera on a sandy beach, with rocks and sea behind her. A small dreamcatcher tattoo sits between the shoulder blades, with a mandala pattern in the centre, a beaded ring and three hanging feathers. The linework is fine and the tattoo is rendered in brown, tan and gold tones on a warm skin tone, centred in the frame.

I was mending the big top that week, sat on an upturned crate with a needle, so she handed me the pliers and told me to keep my hands still. 'It catches the bad dreams,' she said. 'Holds them in the webbing till the sun comes up and burns them off.' Dom, who had walked the high wire for nineteen winters and had never once looked down, laughed from the caravan step and said the only thing that ever caught anything in this outfit was the bailiff.

We struck the last tent on a grey Tuesday in October. The feathers were still turning on their strings when the lorries pulled out of the field, and I looked back from the cab window and saw the catcher swaying in the empty ring, the gold centre taking what little light there was. Mrs Oddie had not taken it down. I asked her why not, and she said somebody should leave a net behind for the dreams that hadn't found their way out of the tent yet.
