The dust of the ferry road was still on my boots when Aunt Ysolde pressed a brass compass into my palm and told me the Marrow Hills had moved again. "They do that in the thaw," she said, as if mountains were wayward goats. The kingdom of Carrow Sendal had no maps worth the parchment, only a guild of surveyors who drew from rumour and whatever the shepherds would admit to over their cheese.

I took the commission nobody wanted: to chart the Quiet Pass, where the snow fell each winter into the shape of a spearhead and was gone by spring. I walked it with a blunt pencil and a ledger of iron stakes. At every cairn I pricked a single dot of ink, because the old guild masters held that a solid line lies, while a dot only admits where you stood. By the ninth cairn the page showed a sharp triangle of dots pointing north-east toward the tarn where the river was supposed to begin.

At the tarn a herdswoman called Brannagh looked over my shoulder and laughed. "Arrows point where people go, not where mountains sit," she said, and showed me the path the goats had worn, which bent away from my triangle entirely. I had drawn what I expected to find, not what was there.

That night I redrew the whole page with nothing but dots and sent it back to the guild with a short note: the pass is where the animals go. Aunt Ysolde pinned it above her desk, and in the lamplight the little dots looked like seed scattered for birds.
