Solid and outline triangles on inner wrists

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two small triangles sit on the inner wrists of a person whose face is not shown, with the hands held forward. The left triangle is solid black and the right is a thin black outline, so the pair contrasts filled and open shapes. The plain white top and grey background keep attention on the crisp black ink.

The sums would not close. Ellen Partridge had walked the baseline twice with the chain, counting links in the rain, and each time the third corner of the triangle slid a few yards east of where the theodolite said it should be. Her brother Tom wanted to blame the instrument. He had carried it up Dunmore Fell on his shoulder for three seasons and loved it the way some men love a horse.

The county had marked the old survey stones with two signs. The north pillar bore a solid black triangle, pointing down and freshly tarred so the sighting men could find it through fog. The south pillar, rebuilt after a winter storm, carried only a thin outline cut into the granite by a mason who had not been told what it was for. Ellen had assumed the outline was a mistake. Nobody on the survey liked a mistake, so nobody had asked.

She sat on the wet step of the south pillar with the ledger open on her knee and pressed her thumb into the cut line. It was deeper than it looked, and the floor of it was rough, as if a stone had once been fitted there and lifted out. Old ground, she thought. Somebody had fixed the first station here and built over it. She shifted the staff a few inches into the hollow and sighted again. This time the three points closed like a hand around a coin.

That evening she wrote the correction in pencil beside the sums and drew a small open triangle in the margin, the same shape as the one on the stone. Tom read it over her shoulder and grumbled that it was not a proper symbol. Ellen blotted the page and left the pencil where it lay, the hollow triangle still open in the margin.
