Small X and O on inner wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two raised forearms show a small black letter X on one inner wrist and a small black letter O on the other. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink sits flat and crisp against the skin. The plain, light background keeps the focus on the two small marks.

It was a postcard of the Danube bridge, and on the back someone had written in pencil two small marks. An X, then an O. Her sister Dora had done the same on every letter they had sent across the river since they were girls who could never agree which bank their mother's house stood on. A kiss, a hug, a promise to write again.
Mira stamped the driver through without a word. Then she took a clean sheet from the drawer, pressed the pen hard, and drew an X in the margin of her incident log, with an O beside it. Nobody read the log except the next shift, and the next shift never looked twice.
Later, when the queue ended and the light went flat over the barrier, she walked the postcard out to the lorry park herself and pushed it through the open window of the cab. The driver grinned and tapped the marks with his thumb. Mira shrugged, because there was no word for it in either language, and she felt lighter for not needing one.
