Two thin parallel bands on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a person with long dark wavy hair in a black V-neck top and a long pendant necklace, with the lower half of the face out of frame. Two thin, sharp black parallel lines encircle one forearm a short distance above the wrist. The linework is crisp and even, with no shading, and the composition is in soft warm tones against a dark background.

Dear Ruth,

You asked why I measured the curtain wall twice before I'd let the scaffold go up, and I still haven't given you a proper answer. Here it is. The old keep at Hallow Scar has two courses of stone running round its base, a hand's width apart, cut so true that Ewan swore the masons must have used a single string line and a prayer. Nobody has found the gap filled with anything but air and a little moss. I spent Tuesday with a plumb bob and a brass rule, and every time I dropped the line the two edges agreed to within a fingernail.

Then there is the thing in the cellar. Under a slab that gave way when I leaned on it, there was a second ring of cut stone, older, with a groove worn down its middle where a rope had run for centuries. Somebody hauled water up through here. Somebody else kept the lines apart so the rope would not chafe against the wall. I think of the two bands as one sentence said twice, so the meaning cannot be lost.

Friday I wrote the measurements in the ledger the way the Lord Warden's clerk would have done it, in pencil, columns ruled with a straightedge. Then I went down with a torch and found the cellar floor had flooded overnight. The water stood exactly level with the lower groove, and I stood there and watched it for an hour, waiting for it to move. It didn't. Keep your ledger, I thought. The stone has been keeping its own.

Come up in June. Bring the good boots. I have left the tape where you'll find it.

Love, Mags
