Small diamond tattoo behind the ear
Geometric · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A side view of a person's head with dark hair pulled up, turned away from the camera so the face is not shown. A small, solid black diamond sits on the skin just behind the ear, with crisp edges and no shading. The image is greyscale, with a plain wall and a bright window in the background.

The lead came to us in coils from Bristol, grey as a wet slate, and my first job was to bend it round the little diamonds of glass until the whole frame held together like a net. Mr Ferrier would not let me near the cutting wheel until I had wasted four panes of good Normandy glass. I wept over the first, swore at the second, and by the fifth I could score a true line in one stroke and feel the pane part clean along it, the way a sailor feels a rope go taut.

The commission was for St Ebba's, a chapel on the Holderness coast where the cliffs gave way a yard every winter. Mrs Harrowby wanted one hundred and twelve diamonds in the east window, all clear and bright, except one. She asked for that one in the lower corner, where the sun came in low off the water, and she would not say why. Mr Ferrier shrugged and told me to find black glass. There was none in the yard, so I walked down to the wreck the tide had left on the shingle, pried a shade from a drowned lantern, and cut a diamond from its smoked glass, thick and dark as a February sea.
When the window went up the morning before the dedication, the light came through the other hundred and eleven panes and spilled gold across the flagstones. The one dark diamond let nothing through. It held a small square of shadow on the floor, and when Mrs Harrowby came in and sat in the pew beneath it, the shadow settled over her gloves as neatly as if someone had measured it. She did not look up. She only said, very quietly, that Edwin would have liked the cut of it.
I have thought about that shadow many times since. It was the one piece of the window that let nothing in, and it was the only part she had come to see.
