Tiny wavy lines on the hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black fine line tattoo of two stacked wavy lines sits on the hand, with the index and middle fingers raised in a V. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the photo is monochrome. The composition is a close crop of the hand, torso and waist, with a ring on the other hand.

The tide tables were wrong again, and Mrs Okonedo at the harbour office would hear about it by Friday. Edie pinned the sheet to the board with two brass tacks and ran her thumb down the column of heights. Eleven feet at Gannet Point, not nine. She had checked the moon twice. The sea had never once consulted the printers in Plymouth.

Her father had kept the book before her, a green ledger with a cracked spine, and every page was a small argument with water. Rain on the sill, a dinghy lost off the breakwater in 1961, the day the lifeboat came in backwards. He had drawn a little sign beside each high water, two stacked waves, the same mark he used for the swell of the bay, so that a stranger could read the book and know the sea had been there. Edie had always thought it looked like a cat's whiskers, or a sum someone had started and abandoned.
On Thursday a man in a yellow oilskin came up the slipway with a clipboard and asked whether the harbour would be dredged before the regatta. Edie told him the truth, that nothing was dredged before the regatta, and that the water would come up over the bottom step regardless. He wrote something down. She did not ask what.
That evening she copied the corrected heights into the green ledger in her own careful hand, then drew the two wavy lines beside the new figure, slightly crooked, the way he always had. Outside the tide turned, and she heard it before she saw it, the long hush of the water deciding where it wanted to go.
